My Story
My name is Mrs.Krishna Satney an I am physically differently abled young lady. I am paralyzed from the mid back downwards. I became paralyzed at the age five years in 1987 when I was struck by an unlicensed motorcycle while walking with my two aunts who were visiting relative in the community.
It was dusk and we were almost near our destination when we heard a loud roaring sound. We didn't know which direction the noise came from but we knew it was headed our way. I attempted to run across the road to meet my other aunt but never made it. I was hit by a motorcycle, which had no headlights and brakes. After waking up in the hospital I was initially blind but my vision eventually returned. I remember telling my aunt that I could not feel my legs. I spent three months in St. Lucia and Barbados hospitals where I was told I would never walk again because some nerve in my spinal chord were damaged. After leaving the hospital everything was different for me. I had to be carried all the time, I couldn't maneuver on my own and I was always in pain .With months of physiotherapy I was finally able to move around on my own. When I became disabled our society believed that you had to remain shut in (stay at home). You were not supposed to do what everyone else was doing . It was a challenge to get back into school and I was allowed only because I had family teaching in my primary school. For secondary school we had to negotiate with the Ministry and the school which would be more practical for me. |
I am now 25 years old and I have lived with my disability for 20 years. My disability has made my life more challenging, but I have not allowed it to affect me personally or keep me from moving on in life. I continued my Primary School Education in Stage 2 and
further excelled to Entrepot Secondary School where I obtained passes in 8 subjects. I am currently employed with Consolidated Foods Ltd for 5 years now as a Merchandising & Research Assistant - Local Suppliers Relations. Under Construction . Not yet complete. |
